About
In the UK, food waste (post farm-gate) totals 10.2mtpa (worth £20bn), and is
associated with more than 22mt of greenhouse gas emissions (WRAP, 2019
report -- 2015 stats). According to studies, ~46% of all fruit and vegetables are
wasted at various stages throughout the supply chain (DEFRA,
FoodStatisticsPocketbook,2016).
A valuable method of prolonging the shelf life of fruit/vegetable produce is by
reducing exposure to ethylene (a plant hormone that accelerates ripening);
allowing additional time for consumption.
In 2010 It'sFresh! launched its ethylene removal filters; a
polymeric sheet coated with the active ingredient, e+, which comprises a zeolite
matrix with a palladium salt dopant. The result is an ethylene scavenging
technology that:
*Absorbs 100 times more ethylene (gram for gram of material) than anything else
currently available
*Is non-toxic - has a LD50 half that of salt (4.9g/kg)
*Delivers a minimum 2 days longer shelf life
*Offers up to a 50% reduction in fresh food waste from 'field to fork'
Our technology is now developing into a new generation of packaging solutions; where our food safe E+ is coated / printed onto packaging (includingpaper/cardboard pads and films such as BOPP,HDPE/LDPE,PET) replacing the need for of our original filter.
This enables any functional flexible packaging used throughout the entire fresh produce supply chain to be directly swapped with an It'sFresh active product, reducing the cost of the 'delivered' technology. By functionalising a range of materials to substitute existing packaging, our technology can be used for a range of new applications, with particular focus on:
*Pulp pads in punnets
*Shrivel sheets/transit liners for use during transport & retail -- support sales of
loose produce
*Flow wraps
Early trials show dramatic improvement in quality and shelf life of climacteric products and ethylene sensitive products and we look forward to working with you to demonstrate the benefit and value of our unique technology.
