FAQs
After six years since its launch, the Solar Impulse Efficient Solution Label is evolving to enhance its reach and effectiveness. In response to urgent global sustainability challenges, we are taking a significant step toward creating sector-specific co-labelling schemes through collaborations with leading organizations in key sectors. This initiative aims to boost the credibility and impact of the Efficient Solution Label by addressing the unique needs and challenges of different sectors. By collaborating with trusted institutions, we ensure that certified solutions not only meet our strict environmental and economic criteria but are also recognized as top-tier solutions in their fields.
In September 2024, we launched our first sector-specific collaboration with the Sustainable Ocean Alliance (SOA), introducing the Ocean Solution Label. This label certifies ocean-based solutions that have earned the Efficient Solution Label, proving that they are both clean and profitable while making a significant positive impact on ocean health. This collaboration showcases how sector-specific co-labelling can accelerate innovation in specialized fields. By leveraging SIF’s globally recognized expertise in evaluating sustainable innovations, this new label reinforces SOA’s commitment to identifying, supporting, and scaling impactful ocean solutions.
The Ocean Solution Label certifies solutions with a positive impact on ocean ecosystems. To qualify, a solution must also obtain the Efficient Solution Label, as both applications are submitted together as one. This ensures solutions meet the Ocean-specific impact criteria and pass the Efficient Solution Label’s standards for feasibility, general environmental impact, and economic benefits.
Ocean Solutions that meet all eligibility criteria for the Solar Impulse Efficient Solution Label and directly contribute to solving a major ocean threat are eligible for the Ocean Solution Label.
The Ocean Solution Label application is done in parallel with the Efficient Solution Label. To apply for the Ocean Solution Label, follow the regular steps to apply for the Solar Impulse Efficient Solution Label.
The main specific action to take to apply for both labels is the following: When you have access to the full application (part 2), in section 3.1 simply specify that you also want to apply for the Ocean Solution Label (by ticking the designated checkbox). This will add some specific ocean-related questions to the Submission Form, and the Solution will be evaluated by experts on additional ocean-related criteria.
If you already have a Solar Impulse Membership (without a labelled solution), you can easily apply for the Ocean Solution Label:
Yes, simply go to the Solution Manager section in your Dashboard to reactivate or duplicate the solution (depending on its status). Then, in the full application (part 2), section 3.1, specify that you also want to apply for the Ocean Solution Label (by ticking the designated checkbox).
Any information from previous applications will carry over, so you won’t need to start from scratch!
You can always contact solution@solarimpulse.com if you have any questions or need guidance throughout the process.
If your solution received the Solar Impulse Efficient Solution Label less than 3 years ago (or has been updated in the past 3 years), you can apply for the Ocean Solution Label by duplicating your existing application and completing the specific Ocean Solution questions. This process saves time, as much of the information will already be filled in. To start, send an email to solution@solarimpulse.com, and the team will help set up your Ocean Solution Submission form.
If your Solar Impulse Label is more than 3 years old and hasn’t been updated, you can apply for the Ocean Solution Label alongside your Solar Impulse Label Update Submission. Select your expired solution in the Solution Manager, reapply, and in the full application (part 2), section 3.1, specify that you also want to apply for the Ocean Solution Label (by ticking the designated checkbox).
You can always contact solution@solarimpulse.com if you have any questions or need guidance throughout the process.
