A system for the effective separation and decanting of water from waste activated sludge and the drying of the treated sludge. Each unit within the system, which is made out of precast concrete, is 8 m x 3m x 1.2m, has a sluice door located in the front wall and a valve controlled filler inlet pipe at the back wall where the sludge enters the bed. This process forces the dry solids to the top of the unit which is the inverse to what occurs in other technologies and provides the uniqueness to this system. The dry solid content on the top also has the effect of filtering the incoming sludge. Each unit is covered with a roof for ventilation, heat absorption and surface water runoff. The sluice door contains alternating plates to facilitate the filling of the units and the decanting of the water at multiple levels within the sludge, with a sump located at the front wall to facilitate the efficient removal of the dried sludge from the beds. A scraper and conveyor can also be added to scrape off the dry solids and transport to a skip. The units are modular in design with each unit having a capacity of 30m3/d. The efficiency of the units depends on the target dry solids required and the climatic conditions. The units are especially efficient in warmer climates. The system can be manually operated or totally automated.
