Our Mission: Reducing the environmental footprint and manufacturing cost of plastic packaging by changing the performance of the material in the injection process. What we do: • KP offers an upstream solution to the sustainability challenges of polymer-based packaging by changing the performance of the polymer during the injection process. It allows to use less virgin material and a better uptake of recycled material when manufacturing PET bottles. • This is achieved through a technology retrofitted in existing injection machinery, hence low cost and scalability as there is no need to develop a new industrial footprint.

About

Many innovations that address waste issues and recyclability of packaging come with trade-offs in terms of cost, Co2 emissions, energy footprint and scalability. From the inception Keiryo realized that in order to achieve a systemic impact an innovation needed to address these trade-offs. Hence, it has to fulfill a number of criteria in terms of sustainability: o Achieve reduced use of material without complexifying recycling streams o Enable better recyclability without increasing CO2 Emissions and in terms of cost: o Create new industry margins and/or reallocate industry margins o Enable global roll out based on low capital requirement for technology conversion o Having a strong IP basis and proprietary know-how that can be shared in a non-competitive way with all stakeholders of the supply chain. On this basis Keiryo Packaging Technologies looked for scientific pathways to extract more value from the base material. To achieve this Keiryo based itself on the well-grounded polymer rheology science of Flow Enhanced Nucleation and Induced Crystallization. According to this science any semi-crystallizable polymer can alter its crystallization and morphological structure when subjected to deformational flows. This phenomenon is what enables fibre spinning. Keiryo Packaging Technologies developed a mechanism to apply it to the Injection Stretch Blow Moulding (ISBM) process of PET Bottles. How is this achieved? A 3D printed metal insert is retrofitted to existing industrial hot runner nozzle housing. (see attached ppt for visual rendition). The insert is designed to generate the required activation energy into the polymer during the injection process. This triggers flow enhanced morphological changes leading to an improvement of the overall material performance (Reduced weight per bottle – higher recycled content). Scalability is enabled by the technology and the IP position The Keiryo Packaging Technology materializes itself in a (670mm/2.5inches) large metal insert which can be retrofitted in existing ISBM machinery globally. As it is manufactured through a 3D printing process it can be produced in a decentralised way. Intellectual Property: The KP technology has 3 patent families covering a large geographical landscape (incl. EU & US). IP has a broad scope across method and product claims. This broad IP enables to share the KP technology in a non-compete way with all stakeholders of the supply chain. Hence, enabling a large roll out of the technology.
