Terra Bioindustries Inc. has created an upcycling platform that turns the 1 billion tonnes of agri-food waste into value added products that have broad market appeal, starting with Brewers Spent Grain (BSG – 40 Million tonnes produced every year) being converted into a sugar for fermentation and food applications, and a protein for food. Recyclose is the first widely applicable sugar to be used as a drop-in replacement for malt extract for beer production as well as for use as a food sweetener, but at a lower price point. Protina is the first spent grain protein for food applications like high protein baked goods and snack bars that are better than those made with soy and pea protein.
Terra is also looking at other sidestreams. Terra partners with a bioethanol producer to convert their corn Spent Grains into sugar, oil and a high value protein for next generation packaging and coating applications.
