About

2 billion people in the world do not have access to safe drinking water, resulting in 485,000 diarrhoeal deaths yearly. In developing countries, studies have indicated that nearly 80% of all diseases are related to “poor water” and sanitation conditions. According to the WHO, 50% of people without access to a safe water source boil their water to purify it, using biofuels like charcoal and firewood. Boiling contaminated water is both a health concern, as it contributes to deaths from indoor air pollution and great environmental concern as it emits CO2. SolarSack has developed an affordable alternative to water purification, utilizing sunlight to kill bacteria and viruses in water, making it safe to drink. The unique polymer foil and construction allows the sun’s UV-A and UV-B rays to kill the contaminants in the water in 4 hours. SolarSack can purify 4 litres of water in 4 hours and is reusable 500 times, creating a total of 2000 litres of purified water, enough for a family of four for one year.
