We developed the world's first plastic shredder for on-site use in households and businesses that use a lot of plastic (hotels, F&B, office pantries etc.). The shredder uses NIR (Near Infra Red) spectroscopy to recognise recyclable plastic types (1, 2, 4 and 5) and only operates with them but with nothing else so 100% safe. The shredded plastic is collected and 100% recycled .It solves 3 problems:
1. ‘wishcycling’: consumers don't know that not all plastic can be recycled and assume that everything they leave at recycle points is recycled. It’s not, because a lot is the wrong type of plastic, it’s contaminated with food residue or labels, or it is mixed (e.g. caps on bottles) or a combination of these three.
2. storage of recyclable plastic: consumers store 85% air since empty plastic contains mainly air
3. transport: transport becomes much more efficient if the plastic is shredded - no more 85% air).
