About

Riverrecycle Oy is a startup with a mission to solve a major environmental and social problem: Plastic waste! Riverrecycle Oy is a Finnish company offering a sustainable solution to prevent ocean plastic pollution in the world's most polluted rivers. We have developed a technical solution to effectively remove floating debris from river systems and a value creation model that can support local livelihoods and economic development. While offering affected population's the infrastructure to turn an ecological problem into an economic opportunity, we also invest in waste management infrastructure. Our solution includes three parts: river collection, waste processing and land-based collection. We are convinced that only a holistic approach can solve the problem in the long term. River cleaning solutions RiverRecycle’s river debris collection system consists of two parts: the debris concentrators and the debris removal system. Riverrecycle offers a range of river debris concentrator technologies, including static booms, active collectors and its own innovative plastic concentrator. An automated wheel enables removal of plastic and other debris from the river. Our solutions are designed to use renewable energy. Each waste fraction is sorted and taken for further processing, including non-recyclable plastics, which will be transformed through pyrolysis into oil to replace the use of virgin fossil oil in the petrochemical industry. RiverRecycle has a long-term goal to ‘self-destruct’ the river clean-up system within 15 years after eradicating waste in rivers by establishing land-based segregating collection systems. Operations are currently focused in Indonesia, India, the Philippines, Bangladesh, Vietnam, Thailand, and Africa.  Together with our technical delivery partner www.Lamor.com, we are able to deploy our river cleanup solutions anywhere around the world. All our projects are developed and implemented in collaboration with local partners. Projects Mithi river, Mumbai Funded by Huhtamäki and in Cooperation with the United Nations Technology Innovation Labs UNTIL, VTT (Finish National Research Center) and the local partner Earth5R (www.earth5r.org) RiverRecycle is installing a project that will clean up the Mithi River in Central Mumbai. The team expects to catch up to 50 tons of plastic waste daily and prevent it from flowing into the ocean. Citarum, Indonesia Funded by the Benioff Ocean Initiative and the Coca Cola Foundation RiverRecycle is building a pilot project, in the Citarum river in Indonesia. The Citarum river is one of the most polluted rivers of the planet. Running through the suburbs and slums of Jakarta it is partially covered by a plastic layer. Former fishermen have turned into waste collectors. The project is expected to collect up to 70 tons of plastic waste from this heavily polluted river on a daily basis.
