About

Reducing emissions alone won't reduce a company's climate risks. And nature-based forms of removals available today cannot be relied on to keep CO2 permanently out of the atmosphere (farmland could be tilled, for example, leading to the release of once-stored CO2). They are in that sense temporary, so while important in slowing climate change, they can only serve as a stopgap. Many projects addressing “carbon offset” sound great, but in reality amount to “carbon avoidance.” At their best, carbon avoidance projects may have a positive social impact, but the amount of carbon they actually offset is difficult to quantify. At their worst, these projects are just greenwashing—designed to give the appearance of environmental impact without proof of impact—and should not be a significant part of a responsible company’s offset portfolio. Given the amount of carbon that is already in the atmosphere and the devastating effects that is having on the planet, if food companies are genuinely interested in reducing their climate risks they should aim to remove 1 ton of carbon for every 1 ton that they emit. The only way to do that for sure is by investing in carbon removal projects. Recapture combines multiple negative emissions technologies working in unison, we’re able to sequester 10 times more CO₂ per acre than just planting trees on their own. By utilizing sustainable timber harvesting as a financial mechanism, the Recapture Dedicated Carbon Removal System (CRS) is able to remove more than 100 tCO₂e from the atmosphere per hectare per year at a sequestration rate 10 times more efficient than standard reforestation alone, enabling a shift in carbon removal implementation from a line item to a profit area, and supercharging the scaling of Direct Air Capture infrastructure to meet global demand. These results are significant, and render the previous avoidance-based carbon offset model obsolete.
