About

eBikes offer fantastic opportunities to reduce the environmental impact of daily commutes. Transport makes up 26% of global CO2 emissions, and as eBikes produce a small fraction of the CO2 per km, providing simpler cycling solutions, in conjunction with infrastructure investment, will encourage more people to choose to cycle on their commute. In addition cycling brings further benefits to society such as increased mental and physical health and reduced urban congestion. One issue is current bicycle transmissions are either complex, unreliable or heavy. These issues are amplified further on eBikes where the forces and speeds are higher. eBike commuter cyclists and producers are looking for simpler, more durable and light solutions. By applying a CVT (Continuously Variable Transmission) to bicycles, a simple and reliable technical solution has been developed. Two key innovations allow the slip load of the v-belt to increase which are 1/ a dual spring CVT which increases the static slip force of the belt and 2/ using a hypergear (gear ratio increase) to increase the speed of the CVT, which then further reduces the torque applied on the pulleys. In addition, the weight was reduced both by using HPDC Aluminium components in place of steel and by creating formulae to describe the all the mechanism parameters and to use AI to minimize the size (weight) of the transmission.
