The industry mainly uses process heat – not electricity – mostly produced with gas. Outside Europe, other fuels (coal, hydrocarbons) are also used.
All process heat going into these plants comes out as residual heat that is cooled away to the environment (i.e., lost).
Taking inspiration from nature's energy system (the ATP-ADP cycle) we designed a heat pump to transform waste heat into process heat, resulting in double-digit energy and CO2 savings in large-scale processes in refineries, petrochemicals, food, and paper & pulp.
Because it brings large-scale emissions reductions, energy efficiency is one of the three pillars in the decarbonization strategy, next to Carbon Capturing & Storage and the use of green energy. The difference: our solution also reduces the operational cost.
