About

Mosan provides smart and aspirational sanitation solutions for low-income communities in developing countries. The Mosan solution is a container-based sanitation service that operates off-grid, waterless and decentralized. The system is completely ecological and recovers nutrients from human excreta. We work closely with communities in the co-design of our services and for hygiene education, and capacity building. The closed-loop sanitation system starts with the safe containment of excreta in our award-winning Mosan Toilet, used in privacy at home, continues with the secure collection and transport of excreta, and the production of valuable recycling products, as biochar fertilizer for agriculture. The resource recovery allows a market-based approach that benefits farmers, creates jobs and generates income for the sustainable development of communities. Furthermore biochar is a viable and scalable carbon sequestration measure, it improves soil quality and prevents artificial fertilizers and overall makes our service climate-positive. Problem: Sanitation is immensely challenging, as reflected in the Sustainable Development Goal 6 (SDG) that targets the elimination of open defecation and achieving universal access to basic water, sanitation and hygiene on household level. In total a staggering 4.2 billion people lack access to improved sanitation (WHO) - more than half of the world’s population. The lack of sanitation or treatment services leads to disease spreading, high mortality rates, rape and violence on women when going to public bathrooms, and immense environmental contamination. Diseases cause children to miss school days and adults to miss work or educational opportunities. Prosperity starts with access to safe sanitation and water. We believe the world can't wait for sewers!
