Lixea is a technology licensing company commercialising a breakthrough sustainable chemical technology invented at Imperial College London. The Dendronic® technology uses a novel low-cost ionic liquid to undertake lignocellulose fractionation. Quite simply, the novel process breaks down complex woody biomass into its constituents in a specific, environmentally benign, and low-cost manner. The chemical components of cellulose fibres, lignin and hemicelluloses can be used and/or converted by down-stream processors to products including sugars, performance chemicals, moulded fibres for packaging ($4.3bn), cellulosic fuels ($625m), phenolic resins ($11bn) and bitumen replacements ($49bn).
