Current research work is centred around a scalable photobioreactor (PBR) using intact PET plastic bottles to grow microalgae. The aim is to valorise single-use plastic material, so low-and-middle-income countries, with limited recycling capabilities, can adopt circular economies.
Micro and macroalgae species can provide bioremediation with minimal water demand. Incorporating the algae farm into an Integrated Multi-Trophic Aquaculture (IMTA) approach can provide additional farming revenue. Once localised production is established, additional biorefinery products from higher-value metabolites can produced.
Ultimately a decentralised plastic recycling solution is envisaged, not just providing components for PBRs, but a range of non-fossil carbon feedstocks & products.
