In Canada, most water and wastewater infrastructure was built between the 1950s and 1970s, meaning that canadian water infrastructure is close to or has already reached the end of its useful life. Around the world, water infrastructure is crumbling, and in need of replacement and repair, especially today with climate change causing significant temperature and drought variations, putting additional strain on these infrastructures. It is becoming urgent to replace the most at-risk drinking water pipes before they break.  New technologies such as artificial intelligence can greatly help municipalities in their strategic decision-making. However, managers who want to innovate face several major obstacles: lack of expertise in artificial intelligence, lack of time and lack of budget. CANN Forecast Software Inc. (CANN) applies artificial intelligence to the water management industry. We build reliable decision tools that enable municipalities to protect public health,  reduce their operating costs, and to have a better understanding of their impact on the environment, all by leveraging their existing data. CANN forecast developed InteliPipes, a tool which enables the identification of vulnerable pipes within a city’s water distribution system in order to make proactive decisions concerning the rehabilitation of water main pipes. These tools were developed using artificial intelligence models that rely on available data to provide useful insights to decision makers to help municipalities decide which water main pipes should be replaced in order to limit water loss.
