About

Back on Track Belgium campaigns for the improvement of rail infrastructure and policies in Europe and the revival of international night train connections between Belgium and other countries. We believe night trains can play a crucial role in a shift towards a sustainable mobility and have the potential to replace many short distance flights. In our opinion slow travelling is a beautiful way to rediscover European landscapes and citizens, to meet other passengers and cross borders. Back on Track Belgium is the Belgian branch of the European group ‘Back on Track’. In june 2019 we started a petition in Belgium for reinvestments in the night trains, a service that stopped in 2003. Our petition received some attention in the national media and brought together a group of enthusiastic volunteers. The reopening of the line Brussels-Vienna by NightJet (ÖBB) in january 2020 surprised activists and travellers and put our struggle even more in the spotlights. By gathering knowledge from people working in the railway sector and bringing it to decision makers and by constant campaigning we continue our fight for more lines (such as Paris-Brussels-Berlin, Brussels-Malmö) and explore possible connections with the UK by night train. Back on Track Belgium was invited on an audience in the federal parliament’s commission on mobility (17/12/2019) and in the Benelux parliament (07/03/2020). We have advised Federal and European members of parliament, private initiatives and NGO's with shared values since.
