After 6 years of airships operations for advertising, VOLIRIS is engaged since 2008 in an ambitious program of Research and Development to provide an airship able to automatically transport containers. Today, the international multimodal freight transport is based primarily on the 40-feet containers. They can carry 30 tons of cargo and require heavy handling devices at the start and at the finish. But it needs a particular road of acceptable quality between these points. Nevertheless, there are, in many countries, areas in which roads do not offer a satisfactory quality and safety; or even areas with a complete road infrastructure deficit (Africa, Northern Canada, US and Russia, inner deserts, developing countries devastated by natural events or conflicts). To meet those needs, VOLIRIS intends to rely on his know-how acquired in airships and UAVs to develop the NATAC: an automatic air shuttle capable of performing automatic back and forth journeys carrying a container. Our core business is the design, construction and scientific studies on airships. We have already greatly advanced in the comprehension of the behavior and performances of airships on ground and in flight. Our research and development team created some CFD software specific to hybrid airships. And our fly tests are providing vitals information to challenge and adjust our mathematics formulas.
