About

Bio-based manufacturing surpasses fossil-based manufacturing in many aspects. However, the cost of traditional bio-based manufacturing is too high when compared with many advantages of current chemical manufacturing, such as rapid reaction, high conversion rate, continuous processes, low water consumption, high product concentrations, easy product recovery, which makes it difficult to commercialize. At the same time, crises related to the environment, use of fossil resources and energy requirements have become problems we cannot ignore. PhaBuilder created a brand new bio-based manufacturing method called "Next Generation Industrial Biotechnology (NGIB)", using a revolutionary bacteria called Halomonas as the chassis cell to achieve the final product - polyhydroxyalkanoate (PHA). The genetic modification of Halomonas enables the usage of second generation feedstock such as stalks and kitchen waste. Moreover, NGIB is insusceptible to bacteria contamination, which enables an open and continuous fermentation process with no need for sterilization. Therefore, NGIB has significantly simplified the production process, saved energy and fresh water, eliminated expensive stainless steel equipment, and increased concentration.
