About

The Gilé National Park is a Protected Area in Mozambique established by the National Administration of Conservation Areas (ANAC) and the Foundation Francois Sommer-International - Foundation for Wildlife Management (FFS-IGF) in order to contribute to the sustainable use and conservation of ecosystems and its natural resources, environmental education while looking for a mutually beneficial relationship between Man and Nature. The aim of FFS-IGF is to support the overall management of Gilé NP, increasing the cooperation between Gilé NP Community Development Department and the neighboring communities, improve the law enforcement capabilities, increase the wildlife and monitor its biodiversity. The landscape of the Gilé NP consists of a miombo woodland and dambo grassland mosaic. Located in the north-eastern part of Zambézia Province, between Gilé and Pebane districts, Gilé NP is the largest inland protected area in Central Mozambique and the second largest inland national park in the Country. Established as a Partial Game Reserve in the 30’s, in May 2020 the Council of Ministers recategorized Gilé Reserve into Category II in the IUCN Protected Areas Categories System, becoming Gilé National Park. Currently, the Park is home to 68 species of large mammals including elephants, buffaloes, wildebeest and kudus, other micro and small species, reptiles and 226 species of birds. Considering the richness of biodiversity, thanks to our constant monitoring of fauna, other species can be added to the checklist.
