We are developing clean and efficient refrigeration systems based on water as refrigerant.

Cold is one of the major source of energy. We required cold in our everyday lives to preserve food, to have air-conditioning but also to allow better operation of most technological systems such IT servers, industrial machinery, industrial processes and so on. However, today's refrigeration systems are using intensively fluorinated gases as refrigerant. These gases contribute greatly to the greenhouse effect. 1kg of fluorinated gases leaked to the atmosphere is equivalent to 3,5 tons of CO2. In a global scale, the contribution of fluorinated gases to global warming represents 1 billion tons of CO2 per year. The problem is so dear that most governments are regulating the use of these refrigerants with a shot-term phase out planned by leading region such as United States and Europe. Similar regulation exists all around the world pushed by the Kigali Agreement. Alternative refrigerants exist on the market. However, they can be toxic, explosive or work under very high pressure, leading to very high constraints on the installation and the maintenance. Our idea is a simple one: instead of using hazardous fluid which are produced in a questionable way and which have harmful impact on the environment, we thought of using the most natural, abundant and neutral fluid in the world, water! Water is a formidable fluid with excellent thermodynamics properties. It can be used in a refrigeration system for all positive temperature application. Its use in a refrigeration system is very efficient and scalable with a gain of 30% in energy efficiency compared to conventional refrigeration system and a cooling power range from 2kW to 2MW. With positive temperature application being roughly 80% of the global cold demand, we could reduce, if our idea were to be implemented in a large scale, the global greenhouse gas emission by 800 million tons of CO2 per year.

The problem is that there exist no refrigeration compressor designed to exploit water in a refrigeration cycle. Leviathan Dynamics develops and commercializes a new generation of refrigeration compressor which makes possible the use of water (R718) as refrigerant. Destined to refrigeration system manufacturers, we support them in implementing this technology by helping them design refrigeration solutions that are green, economic, efficient and in full compliance with the latest regulations.
