About

By 2050, the world population will be nearly 10 billion (World Energy Council, 2013), and global electricity generation is expected to reach 53,600 TWh. The average operational costs for generating electricity using coal gasification combined cycle is between $0.04-$0.08/kWh while that of the photovoltaics is less than $0.01/kWh. Consequently, Solar energy is expected to lead other renewables to phase out the non-renewables. Energy efficiency and renewable energy are the main pillars of clean energy transition. The Earth-based solar panels can only collect energy efficiently during a clear-sky day. The efficiency drops with cloudy weather. Moreover, not all locations can harness solar energy because of the sun’s position. Irradiance alternative is to deploy space-based solar panels above the atmosphere, convert the solar energy into electromagnetic energy and transmit it as signal back to earth, to a rectenna that converts back to electricity. This raises the efficiency of the system compared to earth-based solutions.
