About

The major problem is that on average about 9 million people in Ethiopia are in food shortage every year. When seeds’ demand and supply gaps are compared and analyzed, only 3.5% from a total of 12 million hectares of land is planted and covered with improved seed. Our business solution is clearly stated as follows. Haile Wako Integrated Farm is an agribusiness engaged directly in the production of high yield variety seeds by itself & multiply seeds indirectly by signing a contractual agreement with small-holder farmers via the out-grower scheme to address food security challenges in Ethiopia. Our integrated farm delivers technical support for these out-grower farmers to practice climate-smart agricultural activities such as better extension services, application of inter-cropping, crop rotation as seeds’ production approaches for the enhanced productivities. Post-harvesting of seeds, our farm collects seeds; tags on packaging materials, and ultimately competes for the tender bids on the UN website which the business has already registered on it. Given won the bids, then the farm supplies the seeds produced to UN FAO & other NGOs such as ICRC, Save the Children, etc. Hence, these clients also redistribute seeds for about 1.5 million pro-poor farmers annually and these farmers are those poorest ones that cannot afford to purchase seed by themselves due to the lower-income level till now, these pro-poor farmers have been greatly benefited from the seeds they got in ensuring enhanced production & productivity in previous years and hence improve their overall livelihoods. Besides this, the farm has a plan to establish a tomato paste processing plant to manufacture tomato paste for local & export markets. Furthermore; the integrated farm also has a plan to secure an export license and mainly to export legumes & cereals to UAE markets. This makes my business innovative & unique. Currently, the farm is the winner of the Youth Alliance for Leadership & Development in Africa of the 2020 virtual summit pre-i-boot camp pitch competition.
