About

Our product, FlexSea, is a seaweed-based alternative to flexible single-use plastic packaging. Among its various advantages, we have the use of a natural resource which grows fast, protects coastal areas and is cheap to cultivate/manufacture, as well as a truly biodegradable and home-compostable film - compared to PLA which only degrades in specific conditions and ecosystems. FlexSea aims at completely deleting these problems by marking the end of the packaging life-cycle right after its use. Why bother with recycling, cleaning, post-processing and disposal of your waste if it could simply disappear in a few months in any environment? Our aim is to produce a monomaterial film in large amounts to be processed by packagers as an alternative to usual petroleum-based plastics while maintaining current properties standards and food-grade accreditation. The process is also non-toxic and cost-competitive with current materials. Our prototype is also edible, which both offers marketing potential and provides the most pristine image of biodegradation as it can be assimilated safely by our own body!
