About

DTR1 is KTH research spin-off and is currently focusing on software development for solving this exact issue – providing system operators with tools for real-time capacity management of transformers. Currently, there are many technologies on the market that use dynamic rating for the operation of overhead lines, but not for transformers – given the expertise of KTH researchers in DTR as well as the software development skills of DTR1 team we will be able to change that. Dynamic transformer rating is a necessary step toward smarter, less congested grids with a high share of green electricity. By expanding the capacity limits of transformers' dynamic transformer rating would allow expanding well-performing wind generation sites and allow for more sustainable electricity dispatch by removing congestion in the grid. Now we can transport more electricity from the north of Sweden to the south without waiting to build new infrastructure. Additionally, this digital solution would allow planning future grids with cheaper and smaller transformers, which would not only save investment costs thus making electricity cheaper but also reduce the environmental footprint of new components by lowering the need for construction materials.
