About
In Bioplaster Research Inc we develop smart materials to be used as alternatives to fossil-fuels derived polymers. Our approach is to process invasive marine algae to obtain simple molecules and re-arrange them using non-toxic materials and chemicals to obtain a variety of polymeric products, ranging from foam-like (shock absorbent) to films (thin layers) and thermoplastic bioplastics. All of our materials have the advantage to be customizable according to the mechanical needs of our customers (hardness, flexibility, etc.), and they can be easily produced with common plastic manufacture machinery (extrusion, injection, blow-molding, etc.). The main raw material we are using is sargassum algae, an invasive macroalgae from the Caribbean Sea that negatively impacts coastal livelihoods and the natural ecosystems they depend on. By using this seaweed, we are deviating and avoiding the release of harmful gases and lixiviates on the coastal environments.
