Afrinet is improving energy efficiency to enhance greater energy access through a DC-based solar energy solution that integrates Direct Current in buildings. We leverage on solar energy's DC nature and the growing number of DC appliances to power off-grid rural homes in a more affordable way, eliminating energy conversions to save cost.
To make this possible we developed a DC Wall socket/power outlet and accessories that aid seamless integration of DC power in a building.
When a source of DC-generated electricity such as solar PVs, battery storage or fuel cell exists, consuming the energy in DC eliminates the usual losses that occur during inverter conversions from DC to AC and the subsequent rectifications from AC to DC by the appliances. We achieve energy efficiency improvements of up to 35% resulting in about 30% reduction in cost of solar power adoption, making it easier to extend clean electricity to rural and semi-urban areas with no access to the grid in the quest to achieve SDGs7&13.
We have also created a pay-as-you-go business model for solar power and DC appliances acquisition to further deepen clean energy use by reducing the financial burden on capital costs of the solar home system components.
In the rural and developing communities in sub-Saharan Africa, one of the major barriers to clean energy adoption is cost; by improving on energy efficiency we aim to drive clean energy use and discourage use of kerosene lanterns, petrol/diesel generators and other hazardous energy sources that contribute to green house emissions, this way we create a healthier environment and safe climate.
