The Blueprint for a Solutions Deployment Platform is a cornerstone of the Buildings Breakthrough's Priority Action B4, led by the Solar Impulse Foundation. This platform, developed in partnership with UNEP and the Global Alliance for Buildings and Construction (Global ABC), represents the united efforts of 12 member countries, 7 leading NGOs, and 8 major private sector players.
Launching at COP29 on 14 November, the Blueprint offers concrete examples and case studies from multiple regions, presenting pathways for real-world decarbonisation in the sector. These cases illustrate innovative and economically viable strategies across diverse countries—examples across three subsectors include:
HVAC Solutions: These cover the UAE’s district cooling initiatives, Senegal’s CoolRoof project using reflective roofing to reduce heat stress, Celsius Energy’s geoenergy harnessing for sustainable HVAC, and Germany’s heat pump funding programme, demonstrating the potential of efficient climate control strategies.
Construction Materials: These cases show how different regions are advancing to more sustainable material use. For instance, Colombia is leading on LC3 cement, Germany on material use reduction with Dramix steel fibers, and Southeast Asia with bamboo-based composite shear walls. France’s Cyneo highlights circular construction, while Rwanda and Algeria focus on improving efficiency and comfort through new building materials.
Energy Sharing and Management: This focus includes Stockholm’s BECCS plant for carbon-negative energy, China’s large-scale flow battery systems in Dalian, automated energy management in the UK, and Tokyo’s cap-and-trade programme. These initiatives underscore diverse methods for sharing and optimizing energy use, thus minimizing waste.
Additionally, the Blueprint addresses policies and funding models from Japan, Rwanda, Germany, and the UK that can help scale these solutions, underscoring the essential role of public-private collaboration in driving change.
Looking ahead, the Blueprint provides a roadmap for building upon these initiatives in 2025, with plans to develop a comprehensive solutions catalogue and further implementation projects. By laying out replicable and scalable strategies, this document aims to create a favourable policy and financial environment for sustainable building solutions, ultimately empowering public authorities and private entities to contribute to a decarbonised built environment.
