About

Flexens was founded in 2018 to become a world-leading project development company for advanced sustainable and flexible energy systems, initially developing and implementing a full society scale demo located on the Åland Islands. Flexens core competence is an in-depth understanding of renewable energy sources (RES) and energy systems, and its integration in society with several market stakeholders – where the interaction and storage technologies are at the core. Citizen engagement and participation is one of the companies founding pillar stones, ensuring that bottom-up and top-down initiatives and incentive are met on equal terms. Building bridges between the hindering gaps found in communication and knowledge of sustainable development. The company mission includes the development of new market models based on local legislation mandate, the implementation of a new flexibility trading platform, initiating investment in new flexibility resources and participating in creating new technology companies e.g. to offer new digital services. The project development for multi-technology integrated RES systems is based on competencies in: Concept development for market-based smart energy systems. Communication and citizen engagement Project Management. Investment planning, feasibility studies, funding and financing. Flexens is owned by the Finnish innovation company CLIC Innovation and the key stakeholders in the energy sector on Åland Islands including both private and public companies, as well as the local government of Åland. CLIC Innovation is a non-profit coalition of small- and medium-sized enterprises (SME). The coalition's aim is built upon a public-private partnership model, owned by leading international companies and Finnish research organizations. All partners are committed to create and facilitate breakthrough sustainable solutions within bioeconomy, circular economy and energy systems for the world, with no dominating shareholder. The Åland Islands is an autonomous region of Finland, with a population size of 30.000. The archipelagic island society is governed by its own government and parliament, which has a mandate and legislation rights in several key jurisdictions regarding energy, infrastructure and sustainable development. Åland has adopted an ambitious Energy and Climate agenda but has also been prized by the European Commission as the winner of the European Sustainability Award 2019 for its Sustainable Development Agenda.
