About
bionic surface technologies GmbH (BST) is a Fluid Dynamics High Tech R&D company with its head office in Graz, Austria. BST provides Riblet surfaces for several technical applications in e.g. aviation, wind power industry, motorsports and others. Riblet surfaces are micro- and nanostructured surfaces, that effect a drag reduction up to 8% in the turbulent boundary layer. The benefits of this from nature inspired surfaces (shark skin effect) are depending on the field of application. At passenger aircrafts up to 4% less fuel consumption is possible. At wind turbines riblet surfaces cause less noise emission and more energy output at same wind conditions. Finally in motorsports a lap time reduction of 0.3sec was achieved. At several other industrial applications energy efficiency increase is realized by Riblet surfaces. The nano- and microstructured surfaces are provided as paint, foil or direct implementation via laser processing into the partner’s products.
