Wallonia is lagging in its transition to carbon neutrality. To meet EU climate targets, the region must deliver 40 TWh of renewable heat by 2030 (compared to 12 TWh in Flanders), with 20 TWh required in both the tertiary and industrial sectors. These sectors still rely heavily and locally on fossil fuels such as heating oil and propane. High upfront investment costs, complex energy audits, and waning subsidies hinder progress—especially among SMEs, which often lack guidance to initiate their transition.
“Plug & Heat” by BacktoB directly addresses this systemic gap.
Targeted Emissions: Drastic reduction of CO₂ emissions from fossil combustion (GWP 1) by a factor of 8: from 240 to 30kg CO₂e /MWh.
Why It Matters in Belgium: Energy independence is critical, given Belgium’s reliance on imported fossil fuels (€40/MWh) and looming ETS2 penalties (€16/MWh). Belgium and Wallonia also lack the industrial capacity needed and players to decarbonize at scale.
