An approach to reduce exposure to particulate matter by targeted integration of sustainable air treatment technology

Identification

The Lungs of the City provides a validated solution to substantially improve urban air quality, aiming at particulate matter removal at exposure hotspot locations. The solution is based on a proven air treatment technology, combined with an scientifically validated application strategy and a vast amount of practical experience. Therefore it brings a meaningful addition to existing policies to improve urban air quality. With the Lungs of the City approach, buildings, objects and infrastructure are smartly and efficiently transformed into net air purifiers to bring relief at exposure hotspot and actively reducing health risk. With the Lungs of the City, an important instrument has been added to the toolkit for increasing urban sustainability and improvement of the living environment.

Lungs of the City by ENS Clean Air
Implemented by City of Eindhoven, Eindhoven University in Eindhoven (Netherlands) in 2018

The City of Eindhoven in the Netherlands launched a range of air quality measures to reach 50% health gains for its residents. In collaboration with Eindhoven University of Technology, Air Liquide and ENS Clean AirIn, the Lungs of the City project, transformed the city center into a “Living Lab” for research into large-scale implementation of air purification technology in the public environment. Throughout the project, high-resolution computer models were developed with which the effects of air purification interventions can be virtually determined.

Result

Showed that health risk could be cost-effectively reduced by 0.5 to 1.5 points in %

The environmental benefits

•Limit the health risk of poor air quality with 25%
•Compared to conventional air cleaning technologies, the Lungs of the City approach will reach a 80% reduction in energy consumption
•The captured residue is 100% reused in architectural building ceramics, and therefore finding its way back in the city in a long lasting sustainable application

The Financial benefits

•A 2016 study of the World Bank has shown that each investment in air quality improvement will lead to a fourfold saving in health costs
•A reduction of 2ug/m3 of PM2.5 concentration will lead to a reduction of more than 6% of the socio-economic cost per year per person.
