Fostering wellbeing and pro-environmental behaviors through reconnection to nature
Creating opportunities for individuals and teams to connect in nature can be a powerful antidote to creating a resilient and productive workforce for the long term (1). Directed attention activities, like problem-solving or responding to digital distractions, put the brain in a high-frequency beta state. In nature, the brain shifts to lower-frequency alpha waves, reducing stress and promoting relaxation, creativity, and focus (1). On a winter trail in Norway, one leader of a global organization worried that communing in nature might be a waste of time. “We were incredibly busy at work,” this senior leader said. “But before long, I realized our guards were down and we were able to be authentic and open—and to shift from a state of protection to one of learning. I was amazed.” Extensive evidence from observational and intervention studies suggests that spending time in nature enhances individuals' sense of connectedness to the environment, which in turn fosters stronger pro-environmental attitudes and behaviors (2).
Since the Industrial Revolution, many of us have lost touch with nature, at great cost to our physical, mental, and emotional health. That’s unfortunate, because we need it more than ever: the World Health Organization estimates that since the COVID-19 pandemic began, there has been a 25 percent increase in the global prevalence of anxiety and depression (3). People are more disconnected from themselves, one another, and the planet than ever before (4). This disconnection is having a significant impact in the workplace: employees have expressed to their organizations a strong desire to escape the relentless demands of work, especially as the lines between job and home have become increasingly blurred for millions worldwide (1). Providing opportunities for individuals and teams to connect with nature can be a powerful remedy for the growing levels of prolonged stress in the workplace. Studies indicate that spending time in nature can enhance cognitive function, strengthen connections, and serve as a catalyst for both personal and team development (1).
