Program fostering leadership by guiding professionals on curated wilderness trails worldwide. A CEO reflecting on his time in the Italian Alps learned that effective leadership is about connecting with and empowering team members.

Solution Spotlight

Creating opportunities for individuals and teams to connect in nature can be a powerful antidote to creating a resilient and productive workforce for the long term (1). Directed attention activities, like problem-solving or responding to digital distractions, put the brain in a high-frequency beta state. In nature, the brain shifts to lower-frequency alpha waves, reducing stress and promoting relaxation, creativity, and focus (1). On a winter trail in Norway, one leader of a global organization worried that communing in nature might be a waste of time. “We were incredibly busy at work,” this senior leader said. “But before long, I realized our guards were down and we were able to be authentic and open—and to shift from a state of protection to one of learning. I was amazed.” Extensive evidence from observational and intervention studies suggests that spending time in nature enhances individuals' sense of connectedness to the environment, which in turn fosters stronger pro-environmental attitudes and behaviors (2).
