Identification

STOLECT Carnot battery offers a new electricity storage technology to support the development of renewable energies. Massive quantities of storage are needed on the electric grids in order to reduce the need for fossil backup production when renewables are not producing and to create 100% renewable systems in the future. STOLECT works thanks to the reversible conversion of electrical energy into thermal energy, using turbines and compressors that circulate air in a closed circuit. Energy, in the form of heat, is stored by heating readily available natural materials, such as basaltic rocks, or recycled ceramics. By offering a technology that is not dependent on critical materials, that can be installed anywhere and that is totally environmentally friendly, STOLECT has the potential to greatly reduce the environmental impact of electric systems in all geographical zones, in particular for small networks, in islands for example.

Implementation Stories

STOLECT Carnot battery by Stolect
Implemented by SNCF in Rennes (France) in 2022

After raising €4 million this year, the startup is preparing to build a full-scale demonstrator on an SNCF site near Rennes, supported by the Brittany region and approved by the SMILE project. STOLECT is targeting industrial companies and isolated sites. The 1 MW demonstrator, with a storage capacity of 5 MWh, should be operational in the second half of 2023. After six months of testing, STOLECT, which has been awarded the Solar Impulse label, could then launch the marketing of its solutions in 2024 and change dimension with some twenty units deployed by 2026.

The environmental benefits

  • The first system built have a power rating of 0,7 MW and a energy capacity of 3.5 MWh, other models, 10 times bigger in the next generation, could be developed quickly
  • 0% of critical materials used : the system only uses readily available, cheap and abundant materials
  • A single charging cycle of the system avoids the emission of more than 1 tonne of CO2 in the atmosphere when compared with diesel generators
  • Thanks to its conception, the expected lifespan is at least 30 years, which corresponds to more than 15 000 tonnes of CO2 avoided compared to the use of fossile fuels
  • This solution allows to build 100% renewable electric grids

The Financial benefits

  • 3 times cheaper than lithium batteries in the long term
  • 5 times cheaper than fossil fuel equivalent in the long term
