SolvaLite™

SolvaLite™

A range of composite materials for high volume automotive applications

  • World Alliance Member
  • Featured Solution
  • Labelled Solution
Label Date July 22, 2020
From Belgium
Maturity stage TRL 9 / CRI 3-4 - Commercial Scale Up / Multiple commercial Applications

Traditional composite materials used in the automotive industry require legnthy processing in pressure vessels to create 'cured' structures. The SolvaLite™ range of composite materials overcomes this to allow rapid manufacturing of lightweight structures for the automotive and ground-transport industries. By curing very rapidly, the composites can be used to make components measured in tens - or even hundreds - of thousands of parts per year. This is contrast to traditional composite technologies that are more suited to mere hundreds of parts per year. Through the industrialisation of these composite technologies, car manufacturers can significantly reduce the weight of their vehicles - with a positive effect on emissions of CO2 and particulates. Novel vehicle architectures and concepts are also enabled - increasing the range of choice for end consumers.

The Environmental Benefits

  • Enables lightweight structures that can save up to 2000kg of CO2 compared to mainstream alternative over vehicle lifetime
  • Up to 70% lighter than steel structures

The Financial Benefits

  • Faster cycle times lead to part-cost reductions of up to 75% compared with those traditional carbon-fiber composites
  • Enables reduced investment needs for new vehicle structures by over 75% compared with metallic incumbents
  • Lighter vehicles lead to reduced emissions, helping manufacturers meet vehicle emission standards
