story image

Description

CM Fluids has retrofitted a diesel-powered bus at Munich Airport with their CMF drive technology, transforming it into a CO2-neutral vehicle. By upcycling the original bus body and chassis, they avoided 90 tonnes of CO2 emissions per vehicle. The retrofit included an electric drive system, internal charging station, electric drive axle, Webasto buffer battery, and a small gas engine running on liquid bio-methane. This setup offers a range of up to 800 km and a quick five-minute refill. The project increased energy efficiency by 30%, setting a precedent for sustainable transportation at airports and urban areas.

Impact & Result

- Achieved a 90-ton annual reduction in CO2 emissions by reusing the existing body and chassis of a diesel bus.
- Realized lower investment costs for bus upcycling compared to purchasing new electric or hydrogen buses.
- Enhanced regional value creation through local upcycling processes and resource utilization.

Solution Spotlight

How does it work? Municipalities give their old buses to us instead of scrapping it or selling it abroad. We remove all diesel components like tank, engine etc. and install the patented CMF drive. It consists of an electric drivetrain with an on-board charger and enables 3-fold energy savings: Through recovery of braking energy, usage of engine waste heat and constant optimal load at the on-board charger. Through upcycling we avoid unnecessary material production. Our customer gets back a bus, which is ready for another 12 to 20 years of clean driving. Fuel supply is easy: The CMF drive runs on LNG (liquid natural gas - 30 % CO2 reduction), Bio-LNG (biologically produced natural gas from existing biogas plants - net-zero CO2 emissions right away) or SNG (synthetic natural gas made from hydrogen enables net-zero CO2 emissions). Suitable fuel stations already exist all over Europe. As soon as green hydrogen is available in sufficient amounts the CMF drive can easily be adapted to it.
