BIOHUT® by ECOCEAN implemented by Port of Fréjus in Fréjus (France) in 2018
Ecocean's implementation of the Biohut® project at Port Fréjus has resulted in significant environmental and economic impacts. Environmentally, the project enhances biodiversity by providing habitats for various fish and invertebrate species, which contributes to ecosystem health and resilience. The use of recycled materials for Biohut® construction minimizes waste and reduces the demand for new resources. Additionally, the restored habitats improve carbon sequestration, thus lowering the carbon footprint. Economically, the project offers substantial savings by reducing the need for traditional, resource-intensive restoration methods. The savings help achieve a rapid payback period and provide a solid return on investment. The initiative also stimulates the local economy by attracting eco-tourism, thanks to the underwater trail that allows visitors to engage with marine life.

An ecological restoration solution for the aquatic environment that acts as an artificial nursery habitat
The Biohut is an artificial habitat that allows to restore the ecological function of nursery, originally provided by shallow rocky or sandy bottoms, when they have been impacted and degraded by coastal constructions (ports, marinas, outfall at sea, etc.). The design of the Biohut comes from observation and understanding of the ecological functions provided by natural nursery areas. Biohut provides a complex natural substrates that is colonized by rich fauna and flora, that is the food resource of juvenile fish, and a physical shelter where predators are not able to reach juvenile fish. The Biohut, by its size and facility of installation, is easy to install, even at big scale, in ports, marinas, or on all kind of infrastructures, and it is also a perfect support to raise public awareness about marine biodiversity protection.
