Identification

The technology is a submerged oscillating wave surge converter that produces consistent renewable energy from ocean waves. The unit consists of three main subsystems; Panel, Power Take-Off and Foundation. As Panel moves in sea, it absorbs energy from waves. Panel is connected to mechanical drivetrain which results in hydraulic fluids being pumped inside a closed hydraulic circuit. All the elements of the hydraulic circuit are enclosed inside a hermetic structure inside the device and are not exposed to the marine environment. The high-pressure fluids are fed into a power storage and smoothing system, which connects to a hydraulic motor that drives an electricity generator. The electrical output from this renewable wave energy power plant is then connected to the electric grid via a subsea cable and landside substation. The devices’ foundation is floating concrete barge which will be towed with a tug boat from harbour to installation site

The environmental benefits

  • A single WaveRoller unit (one panel and PTO combination) is rated at between 350kW and 1000kW
  • WaveRoller can support grid stability through fast frequency response (2s-10s)
  • Life-cycle carbon intensity of the WaveRoller is 33 gCO2/kWh (around 30% lower than solar PV)
  • Carbon intensity of power generation can be up to 85% lower than existing levels
03.

The Financial benefits

  • Current LCOE in the range of 100-150 EUR/MWh, with further reductions possible as deployments increase
  • Wave energy allows production of renewable electricity using a stable resource freely available to many countries
  • Offsets reliance on carbon-based generation, so no ongoing costs for fuel (e.g. coal, oil, gas) purchases to generate electricity
