Refurbishing smartphones: an eco-efficient way to reduce e-waste

01.

Identification

By refurbishing smartphones, the lifespan is expected to be increased from 21.6months to 33.6 months, reducing the total CO2 emissions, keeping the smartphone in a better state (cover and protector glass), and possibly give the device a third life &; increase job creation. The upcoming project is to activate a buy back program in order to reduce the number of hibernating devices (estimated at 88% of the total volume sold) and to increase the refurbishment rate and to increase the material recovery rate. Any initiative to increase the recycling rate has a direct impact on the use of raw and precious material. The distribution model is focussed on B2B customers and telecom operators. Buying a refurbished device has the following indirect benefits: lower CO2 emission, less raw material, less pollution, less unhealthy labour by extracting raw material.

  • For a 250g smartphone, almost 40 kg of raw material is needed
03.

The Financial benefits

  • Buying a refurbished device makes a saving from 30 to 40%
  • Material recovery: if only today 12% of the total smartphones are recovered, the value of recovered gold, silver, copper, palladium, cobalt & lithium would be almost 36M$.
  • To refurbish 10000 smartphones, 8 jobs are created

Implementation Stories

Back2Buzz by Back2Buzz
Implemented by GIE AXA in multiple cities (France) in 2020

GIE AXA, an insurance company, looked for a new offer of telephony for its employees to reduce the carbon footprint generated by its IT equipment. In 2020, they developed an offer for their French entities with reconditioned phones with Back2Buzz. Once a smartphone is needed for a new collaborator or for the replacement of a current phone, an Apple or Android device is provided to the person in question without any financial participation. This implementation includes a 2-year warranty from the refurbishment company, as well as on-site maintenance when required.

Result

Since 2020, 1,489 refurbished smartphones have been ordered = 45 tons of co2 avoided
