Batteries are in almost everything we use, almost every day of our lives. Whether it is your phone, laptop, or eventually all the vehicles that we drive, batteries will affect most areas in our life. To combat climate change, it is critical that we move to a majority of fully electric vehicles and renewable energy within the next decade. The key to both is the ability to store energy quickly, safely, and to store enough for hundreds of miles of range, or hours without wind or sunlight. The GDI solution aims at providing large scale manufacturing of 15 minute fast-charging energy storage technologies with 30% higher energy to increase utilization of renewable energy, mass transportation, and electric mobility. Also, the GHG footprint of a Lithium-Ion NMC battery using GDI silicon-based anode is estimated to be 92.5 kgCO2e per kWh, 21% lower on average than traditional Li-Ion NMC batteries. GDI’s mission is to develop cleantech that can scale to large volumes at attractive economics.

The Environmental Benefits

  • Potential energy density of 400Wh/kg, increasing runtime or vehicle range by 30% compared to today's Li-ion batteries
  • Produced using traditional thin film PV equipment, could scale to Gigawatt scale more rapidly then solid state or other silicon technologies for Li-ion batteries
  • 3x faster charging would enable higher % utilization of devices, products, or vehicles using these batteries and accelerate the adoption of EVs, as 15 min. charging is the last frontier to convert ICE vehicle users to EV
  • 301 Mega tonnes of CO2e could be avoided during the next 10 years with higher EV market adoption scenarios, through commercialisation of 15 minute high energy dense Silicon based Li-ion batteries that can increase vehicle range or device runtime by 30%
  • GHGs emissions of manufacturing of Li-ion batteries are 21% lower on average than traditional Li-Ion NMC batteries with GDI advanced electrodes
  • Silicon anodes will be more readily recyclable than current graphite based anodes in Li-ion batteries

The Financial Benefits

  • 30-50% Lower Cost vs. other high silicon and solid-state Li-ion anodes
  • 40% Lower CAPEX per GWh compared with conventional Li-ion anodes per kWH and Gigawatt hour of capacity
  • Faster charging and higher energy will increase utilization of the device, vehicle, service, or grid storage
