Hotels Magic Costa Blanca
Benidorm
Magic Costa Blanca Hotels aimed to tackle food waste by introducing innovative waste management solutions across its Spanish accommodations. In 2023, Magic Cristal Park in Benidorm became the first in the chain to implement LightBlue Consulting's FIT Food Waste Tech solution, designed specifically for commercial kitchens. Following its success, the FIT solution expanded to five more properties in Spain, demonstrating the hospitality industry's growing commitment to sustainability.
Between May 2023 and May 2024, the FIT solution made a remarkable impact by reducing food waste by 48 tonnes and saving approximately 96,460 meals that would have otherwise gone to waste. This initiative also prevented the emission of 120 tonnes of CO₂, significantly lowering the carbon footprint associated with food disposal. Altogether, these efforts resulted in an impressive $182,311 in total savings.
Thanks to FIT and LightBlue’s consulting guidance, we’ve seen a 31% reduction in food waste, prevented 120,570 kg of CO2 emissions, and achieved savings of $182,300 USD in the first year alone. Beyond these impressive figures, FIT has transformed our mindset, making sustainability a core part of our daily operations and leaving a lasting impact on both our business and the Benidorm culinary community. For Magic Costa Blanca, it really is great news to have the team involved with the planet, not only to save on costs and food, but also to return to society what it gives back to us.

Food waste has also a huge environmental impact, knowing the carbon, water, chemical and land footprint of agriculture. From an economic perspective, the BCG estimates that this global food waste issue is worth $1.2 trillion but represents in the other hand a $700 billion opportunity. Misunderstanding about the financial/social/environmental impacts of food waste by food professionals explains why so much is still wasted, and this misunderstanding is intrinsically linked to a lack of tracking. A cost-effective food waste monitoring system, helping to answer the key questions pertaining to this issue (how much is wasted, when, where, what it is, why, and how much it costs), will help overcome this . This newly available information is the knowledge needed to bring change in operations.
