AgroSustain and Giovenalli have been working together for over three years with the goal of reducing food waste in the supply chain. In order to do so, we performed several efficacy trials with the edible coating of AgroSustain on the highly perishable crops sold by Giovanelli e.g. mangoes, papayas with coating application in Switzlerand and in the country of origin e.g., Brazil, Ivory Coast that permitted us to demonstrate coating efficacy in the supply chain and provide strong evidence on its application at the commercial scale.
Post-harvest treatment usage was reduced by 50%, demonstrating enhanced efficiency and sustainability. Additionally, the shelf-life of crops during cold storage was extended by 2-3 weeks, ensuring fresher produce over a longer duration. These improvements also contributed to a reduction in store waste by up to 50%, highlighting a positive impact on overall resource management and waste reduction.
AgroSustain is a Swiss-based company that developed and commercialized edible coating, a solution that permits to preserve the quality of fruits and cut-flowers from harvest to the end consumer. The coating of AgroSustain (Afondo) is composed of edible emulsifiers and vegetable oils and is thus compatible with all diets, including vegan. Afondo can be applied in the packing house by spraying or bathing using existing machinery. Upon its application, Afondo forms an invisible layer on the crop surface that provides the following benefits: - Reduction of water loss by 35%; - Reduction of post-harvest treatments, including fungicides, by 50%; -Extension of shelf-life during cold storage, depending on the crop type, between two weeks to one month; - Afondo doesn't impact the natural crop ripening and thus can be applied directly at the grower; -The commercial sales reveal that Afondo permits the reduction of waste at the retailer by up to 55%.
