Clams from clam fishing and processing get discarded as waste. Main problem for processing has been the lack of knowledge of their chemical potential and the organic tissue that needs to be cleaned off. Sustainable sources of calcium are not many, and most of them demand sacrifices, such as scares from extraction zones and mines, or utilization of the harvesting of vulnerable sea beds. The solution Bluecal aims to utilize waste from clam fishing giving boosting rural fishing areas and giving the market for food calcium a cheap organic and sustainable alternative. Bluecal gives end users the option of buying sustainable calcium products at the same price level as other traditional goods on the market, with the added benefit of lowering environmental impact by avoiding waste being sent to landfills and decreasing energy usage in production stages.

The Environmental Benefits

  • From every metric ton of clam fished meat, calcium is over 600 kg
  • 99.5% of quahog clams is calcium carbonate
  • 100% sustainable source of calcium
  • Around 80% less CO2 emission compared to alternative harvesting

The Financial Benefits

  • Calcium can be 20% cheaper than mainstream alternative
  • Increase catch value of clams by around 20%
