Innovative latent heat thermal energy storage system for industrial heat decarbonization

Greendur is a deeptech startup focusing on decarbonization of process heat in industry through innovative thermal energy storage. Industrial heat accounts for 2/3 of industrial energy demand and 70% is based on fossil fuel, emitting 9 billion tons of CO2/year. Greendur's thermal battery is a highly flexible and multifunctional system, which can use electricity or heat from renewables/grid/waste energy as energy input, to deliver steam and clean heat up to 350º C. With intra-day or day-to-day charging and discharging, this system can facilitate the management of industrial process heat based on intermittently energy sources, offering substantial reduction of CO2 emissions and energy associated costs and a higher energy independency. GREENDUR´s Unique Deeptech Approach based on phase change materials, offers a competitive advantage as compared with sensible heat storage thanks to its higher energy storage capacity and its constant temperature for discharging. It is ideal for industrial applications.

The environmental benefits

  • High energy density solution: 170-295 kWh/m3 depending on thermal jump. PCMs can store 5–14 times more heat than sensible heat
  • High lifespan of 20-25 years and efficiency higher than 90%
  • Long duration energy storage: flexibility from hours (4 hours when discharging at maximum power) to days (thermal losses around 1%)
  • TES could enable a potential 1793 TWh of fossil fuel replacement by renewable energy and/or surplus heat, leading to a reduction of 513 Mt CO2 equivalent GHG emissions per year
  • Thermal batteries produces almost half of CO2 equivalent than lithium iron phosphate battery (LIPB) and it reduces the environmental impact by at least 80% as compared with LIPB
