Saffron Urban Farming

Urban agriculture on rooftops, without using running water, energy or chemicals

Identification

Using low-tech and flexible installation, this solution grows high-quality saffron on local rooftops, respecting both cities and nature.

Since saffron is traditionally imported from Iran, its production and transportation result in significant CO2 emissions. To meet this challenge, BienElevées' solution adapted conventional saffron farming to urban rooftop agriculture thanks to acclimated crocus sativus. By using only rainwater and locally produced compost, the soil has been meticulously developed to maximise rainwater runoff and drainage. While producing no waste and plastic-free sustainable packagings, urban saffron farms provide a high-quality spice, consuming no water, energy or chemicals. In addition to the production of saffron, urban farms host agricultural workshops for city dwellers, generating beneficial traffic to nearby businesses.
