Passive Variable Geometry by Windcity implemented by ITI-CERTH Information Technology Institute - Center for Research & Technology Hellas in Thessaloniki (Greece) in 2024
This is the first distributed wind energy installation in the Country having all the following features at once: - it's installed in a rooftop for building integration, - it's sharing a standard solar inverter for full integration with the PV panels in the same rooftop, - and it's tied to the grid With a nominal power production of 2 kW and a peak of 3,85 kW, the installation is already a marketable and EU Machinery Directive compliant in Class IV of IEC 61400-2: this means it can withstand in operations a 50 years returning period wind of 110 km/h. Due to the Climate Change effects, the installation already resisted this wind speed twice after less than 2 years period in Thessaloniki.

An energy conversion solution that allows efficient energy production by low-altitude (urban) blowing winds
Until now, standard wind energy solutions have focused on the predictable behaviour of winds: the regular, laminar flow found only at high altitudes. However, winds can have much more varied behaviours. Windcity has developed, patented and produces a Passive Variable Geometry turbine, an energy conversion solution to allow efficient energy production by low-altitude blowing winds, enabling the utilisation of wind in urban areas for the benefit of society.
