Passive Variable Geometry

An energy conversion solution that allows efficient energy production by low-altitude (urban) blowing winds

Identification

Until now, standard wind energy solutions have focused on the predictable behaviour of winds: the regular, laminar flow found only at high altitudes. However, winds can have much more varied behaviours. Windcity has developed, patented and produces a Passive Variable Geometry turbine, an energy conversion solution to allow efficient energy production by low-altitude blowing winds, enabling the utilisation of wind in urban areas for the benefit of society.

The environmental benefits

  • Urban wind applications have a great potential increase in energy harvesting: the turbulent wind power lost with conventional tech is fully recovered as a circular input by our solution, which offers up to a net +67% energy production.
  • Urban winds come in many short gusts of 3-5 minutes duration: conventional wind tech use this time to slowly speed-up before starting to produce
  • Being fast to speed-up and starting to produce during the short wind gust requires acceleration: in a turbulent average wind of 18 km/h our solution displays up to 8 times (800x) higher acceleration compared to standard wind tech..
  • Up to 100% of the urban wind today wasted can be recovered: this translates to +65% overall energy production in the urban environment
  • Up to 45% CO2 emission reduction in wind turbine production
  • Average 60% of the blade materials from recycled fibers
03.

The Financial benefits

  • in an urban wind site, pay 0,108 €/kWh equivalent energy price, that is only a 30% of the average 2022 energy price
  • Save up to 40% of the wind energy installed costs: our rooftop installation uses the existing building as a wind tower
