Wind Tulips

Small wind turbines combining efficiency, low noise, bird friendliness and synergistic clustering

Identification

Flower Turbines tackles multiple problems of small wind turbines in one product. In the past, it was common that only inefficient turbines were able to produce little noise. Turbines were placed close to each other resulting in lower performance, people were concerned about bird killing and the turbine's appearance prevented zoning. Flower Turbines uses innovative aerodynamics and design to make small wind turbines that can be used near people and buildings. Offered in several sizes, they are visually pleasing and practically silent. Their higher efficiency compared to turbines of a similar class allows them to produce electricity at lower wind speeds, and their clustering effect allows more turbines to be installed cost-effectively for better performance in any suitable location.

Implementation Stories

Wind Tulips by FLOWER TURBINES
Implemented by City of Nissewaard in Nissewaard (Netherlands) in 2022

The City of Nissewaard with a population of more than 90,000 inhabitants implemented the Solution in March 2022 with one charging pole combining wind and solar, and 6 bicycle charging racks. The aim was to have a complete off-grid charging station with no more energy costs. Charging on-site with clean energy helped the city advocate for greener transportation to reduce the use of cars and motorcycles by making more e-bikes available for citizens.

Result

Designed to recharge the batteries to power 6 e-bikes in about 2 to 3 days depending on the wind and sun

The environmental benefits

  • The largest size turbine has 5 meters high blades and comes with a 5 kilowatt generator that could produce 10,000 kilowatt hours per year
  • Official measurements of noise downstream from the turbines have shown them to be no higher and sometimes lower than that of the wind itself
  • Flower Turbines can start spinning at 1.2 meters per second wind while most wind turbines start at 3 meters per second
  • Annual 5% reduction of emissions from grid produced electricity in windy areas within 20 years
  • 100% of materials used are recyclable - most of the turbine is steel and aluminum
04.

The Financial benefits

  • Savings on electricity costs resulting in a 2-10 years payback time, depending on wind speed, number of turbines and grid price
  • In a windy area and with the large size turbine, 300% more energy per square meter and thus income per square meter than solar alone
  • When used in conjunction with solar panels in microgrids, it reduces the cost by 10-30% by reducing the need for batteries
