LOHC infrastructure for large-scale hydrogen transport

A hydrogen distribution solution that enables safe and efficient large-scale hydrogen transport

01.

Identification

The solution aims at providing a sustainable, safe and cost-efficient option to store and transport large amounts of hydrogen via the innovative LOHC technology (liquid organic hydrogen carrier). The LOHC technology stores hydrogen in a liquid carrier fluid via a chemical reaction, making it safe and easy to handle and transport. At the customer site, hydrogen can be released again when needed. The process of storing and releasing hydrogen is reversible, meaning the carrier liquid is not consumed. The idea is similar to filling and emptying a deposit bottle, which is then ready for the next storage cycle. The LOHC has the same material properties as diesel and can therefore be distributed in the existing mineral oil infrastructure (e. g. tank trucks, and tank ships).

02.

The environmental benefits

  • 1,800 kg of hydrogen can be transported via LOHC in a conventional tank truck which is about 3-4 times the capacity of compressed hydrogen at 200 bar
  • There is zero molecular hydrogen and zero hydrogen loss along the LOHC supply chain
  • The lifetime of LOHC systems is around 20 years
  • Can reduce emissions up to 90 % compared to the supply of grey hydrogen via steam methane reformer
  • Due to the exothermal hydrogenation process, the solution can provide up to 10 MWh of high-quality heat per ton of stored hydrogen to supply e. g. local heating networks or a desalination unit
03.

The Financial benefits

  • Having multi-100 tpd renewable hydrogen accessible before end of 2030
  • In many use cases the cheapest solution, while being safer and reusing existing assets (according to studies)
