Billion of IoTs will be installed in the coming years and more than half of them will be inside buildings. But with traditional solutions to power these new products, such as batteries, we are faced with many challenges associated: Over 15 Billon of Batteries are thrown away in nature every year. Also, replacing a battery in Smart buildings is a problem, because this basic maintenance must be done by an authorized and qualified person. This means a much higher cost than the battery itself. LAYER presents high profitability for the customers with a low TCO (Total Cost of Ownership) thanks to a significant reduction of the maintenance costs of about 80%. Finally, using batteries requires dedicated space to house them in connected objects. All this leads to larger and less discreet products. LAYER was developed, which means Light As Your Energetic Response in order to become a sustainable alternative to batteries.

The Environmental Benefits

  • Generates energy from ambient light, even at very low luminosity from 5 lux, and operates with a wide range of communication protocols (BLE, LORA, NB IoT,...)
  • Inkjet printing technologies offer many advantages compared to competitors, especially for the realisation of small devices with free shapes allowing better integration in IoT products and solutions (Smart Home, Smart Buildings, Tracking, etc...)
  • The LAYER process does not require much energy with a return on energy investment of about 4 months
  • No use of rare earths or heavy materials and less than 1g of organic raw materials to produce 1 m²
  • Emissions are estimated at around 129 g CO2eq for a standard module (49 cm²) which can produce 55 µw/cm² under 500 lux

The Financial Benefits

  • LAYER presents high profitability for the customers with a low TCO (Total Cost of Ownership) thanks to a significant reduction of the maintenance costs of about 80%
  • With the use of a standard module of 48 cm² over 10 years, 130 CR 2032 batteries can be substituted
