Description

As the largest retailer within the IKEA franchise system, Ingka Group oversees approximately 400 IKEA outlets across more than 30 countries. Through the adoption of Winnow, Ingka Group recognized a chance to combat food wastage by combining co-worker awareness with technology. At the core of this endeavor is the integration of artificial intelligence, made possible through a partnership with Winnow Solutions. This significant accomplishment is credited to the commitment of over 20,000 IKEA food co-workers, who have received training to integrate Winnow's AI technology into their everyday tasks and are fully committed to the company's goals.

Impact & Result

  • By saving over 20 million meals, IKEA stores have significantly reduced the cost associated with wasted food, optimizing operational efficiency and improving profitability.
  • Avoiding 36,000 tonnes of CO2e emissions demonstrates a substantial contribution to combating climate change and reducing the environmental footprint of their operations.

Solution Spotlight

Using a camera, a set of smart scales and the same type of machine learning technology found in autonomous vehicles, Winnow Vision ‘learns’ to recognise different foods being thrown in the bin and calculates the financial and environment cost of this discarded food to commercial kitchens. Businesses and chefs can then adjust their food purchasing decisions accordingly, reducing their spending and tackling a fundamental problem of food waste: overproduction. Winnow has helped commercial kitchens save more than $33 million in annualised food costs which equates to preventing over 23 million meals going in the bin. The new, AI-powered Winnow Vision is already installed in over 75 kitchens and the technology will be rolled out to hundreds more this year.
